The Process

  1. Choose a range of octaves on the MIDI keyboard (the physical keys)

  2. Create the graphic representation of the piano keys. In this case, I created standard white and black keys in Illustrator.

  3. Then I created a colored version of each key in After Effects.

  4. All standard and colored versions of keys are exported as separate layers with alpha channels.

  5. Export audio files for the note that corresponds to each key (we chose an organ-esque sound).

  6. Import all graphics and sound effects into WATCHOUT Production software.

  7. Hook up MIDI controller to WATCHOUT Production computer.

  8. Program each key to trigger an opacity change that reveals the colored version of itself.

  9. Program each key to trigger the corresponding sound effect.
